Stacey Chin, MA, CFP®, ChFC®, Chief Investment Officer and Private Wealth Advisor at Treehouse Wealth Advisors, was recently featured as an expert in a MoneyGeek article titled “How Long Does Life Insurance Take to Pay Out? (2025 Guide).”
The guide addresses one of the most pressing concerns for life insurance beneficiaries: understanding the timeline for receiving death benefit payouts. The article explains that most life insurance payouts are issued within 14 to 60 days after a claim is filed, assuming all required documentation is in order and there are no complications. It covers essential factors that can affect payout timing, including the completeness of paperwork, the cause of death, policy-specific requirements, and insurer procedures.
Key topics covered in the article include the claim-filing process, required documentation such as death certificates and policy information, common causes of delays, and strategies for expediting payouts. The piece also addresses special circumstances that might trigger additional review periods, such as deaths within the first two years of a policy or specific causes of death that require further investigation.
Stacey provided guidance on several critical aspects of life insurance payouts, emphasizing the importance of proper preparation and understanding the process. When discussing factors that can affect payout timing, she explained: “In ideal circumstances where there are no complications, life insurance can pay out the death benefit fairly quickly (within a month) after the claim is filed. However, several factors could delay a payout.”
She highlighted key factors, including completeness of claims documentation, cause of death investigations, state regulations, and beneficiary complications. Regarding best practices for beneficiaries, Stacey advised: “First, beneficiaries should understand the claim process and ensure that their documentation is in good order. At a minimum, beneficiaries will typically need to provide a death certificate, the completed claim form, and the insurance policy number or other identifying information.”
Additionally, she emphasized the value of professional guidance: “Understanding the payout options and consulting with a financial professional can help maximize the benefit. Some policies may allow a beneficiary to receive the payout in installments or via an annuity, which could provide more long-term stability and financial security.”
