We had a wonderful time discussing The Good Life with our most recent Book Club attendees on Wednesday October 24th! We had a great conversation on the role that quality relationships play in each of our own lives, from ‘weak-ties’ to those who are closest to us, as well as how comfortable and adaptable we each are to change. A common thread was the spotlight that the COVID-19 pandemic placed on the importance of relationships, by either taking us away from some of the people who we typically interacted with day to day to creating even more interaction with the people we were surrounded by at home.

For those that were not able to join us, we read The Good Life: Lessons from the World’s Longest Scientific Study of Happiness, a book written by the current directors of the Harvard Study of Adult Development. The participants in the study, young boys from disadvantaged and troubled families in Boston and Harvard University undergraduates, have been tracked from childhood throughout their lifetimes, and many of their children and family members are now part of the study themselves. Dr. Waldinger’s TED Talk – “What Makes a Good Life” provides a great summary.

For those who were able to make it, thank you so much for a lively and thoughtful discussion. We have really enjoyed getting to know many of you better, hearing your personal stories, and tackling these thought-provoking reads with you. We plan to host our next book club virtual event on Wednesday, January 31st at 5 PM PT. We will be reading Jane Goodall’s The Book of Hope. Save the date and look out for our official invite for registration. Each Book Club event we have had both returning members as well as new attendees, so if the book sounds interesting to you please feel free to join in on the discussion. We would love to have you!
